Subaru has been quietly building the most successful off-road sub-brand nobody talks about. Since 2021 the company has sold nearly 250,000 Wilderness-badged vehicles — and the Forester Wilderness alone accounts for more than 13% of all Forester sales. That's not a niche trim. That's a movement.
Now Subaru is electrifying it. The 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid is the first hybrid ever to wear the Wilderness badge, and it doesn't give up a single inch of ground clearance to get there. It goes on sale late 2026. Here's what it is — and where it sits for anyone building out a Subaru.
A hybrid that didn't get soft
The usual story with a hybrid variant is compromise. Battery packs eat ground clearance, extra weight blunts the suspension, and the off-road version quietly becomes an appearance package.
That didn't happen here. The Forester Wilderness Hybrid keeps the full 9.3 inches of ground clearance — identical to the gas Wilderness, and a solid six-tenths more than the standard Forester Hybrid's 8.7 inches. Subaru got there with longer coil springs and shock absorbers rather than by cutting corners elsewhere.
The rest of the hardware carries over intact:
• Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, standard as always
• All-terrain tires on 17-inch matte black wheels
• X-MODE Dual-Mode System with Hill Descent Control — including Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings
• Factory skid plates and additional underbody protection
• Heavy exterior cladding over the wheel wells and lower impact zones
• Improved approach, breakover, and departure angles versus other Forester trims

The powertrain: efficiency that buys you range
Under the hood is an Atkinson/Miller-cycle 2.5-liter BOXER tuned for efficiency, paired with a high-capacity lithium-ion battery and electric motors for a combined 194 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque, running through a Lineartronic CVT.
The numbers that actually matter: up to 25% better fuel economy than the gas Wilderness, and a claimed 481 miles of range per tank.
Think about what that means on a trip. That's a trailhead four hundred miles out and back without hunting for the one gas station in town. For overlanding and dispersed camping — where the nearest fuel might be an hour of dirt away — range is capability. Subaru's own framing is that it goes well past the point where traditional hybrids have to turn around, and that's a fair claim.
Loaded, and only one way to buy it
The Wilderness Hybrid comes in a single fully-equipped spec — no option-sheet gymnastics. Standard kit includes an 11-speaker Harman/Kardon system, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with navigation and Apple Maps integration, an 11.6-inch tablet-style touchscreen, a power liftgate, animal-free StarTex upholstery, and Subaru's EyeSight Driver Assist. Several of those are still optional on the gas Wilderness.
Outside, it wears Wilderness-specific fascias, copper-toned accents, a hybrid-specific badge, and the roof rails that make it a rack-and-rooftop-tent platform straight off the lot.
Price and timing
Subaru hasn't announced pricing — the official line is that it comes closer to launch. The Wilderness Hybrid goes on sale in late 2026, so dealer arrivals and final numbers should firm up over the next few months.
Why a Wilderness is a great lighting build
Here's our angle as lighting people, and it's a little different from the truck argument.
Wilderness owners generally aren't rock crawling. They're running forest service roads at dusk, gravel to a trailhead before sunrise, snow-covered back roads in winter, and dispersed campsites with no marked entrance. That's exactly where factory headlights run out — not because the terrain is extreme, but because it's unlit, unfamiliar, and full of things that appear at the edge of your beams. A deer at the shoulder. A washout. The turnoff you've now driven past twice.
And the Forester's front end genuinely suits a bar. The bumper gives you a clean horizontal run beneath the grille, and the boxy upper body means a light bar reads as intentional rather than bolted-on. A front bumper LED bar for distance turns a Wilderness from "capable in daylight" into capable, period.
The hybrid angle reinforces it: more range means longer days and more driving after dark, which is precisely when auxiliary lighting stops being cosmetic.

Where we stand on fitment — straight answer
We don't have a kit for the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid, and neither does anyone else. The vehicle doesn't go on sale until late 2026.
Worth being specific, because it matters if you're shopping: our current Forester light bars fit 2019–2024 models. We have not test-fitted the redesigned sixth-generation Forester (2025 and up), and the 2027 Wilderness Hybrid is built on that newer platform. We don't sell fitment we haven't confirmed on the actual vehicle — we get the car, test-fit brackets, and dial in the mounting before a kit ever goes live.
Already driving a Wilderness? Good news — we cover the trim across several models today:
• Outback Wilderness (2020–2024) — PRO and SLIM light bars, plus a reverse light kit
• Crosstrek Wilderness (2018–2023 Gen 2 and 2024–2026 Gen 3) — PRO and SLIM
• Forester Wilderness (2019–2024) — PRO and SLIM
All of it bolts on with no cutting or drilling, in White, Amber, or dual-function White with Amber DRL. Browse the full range in our Subaru LED light kits collection.

The most interesting crossover of 2027
Subaru found the version of electrification that actually suits its customers: not a compromise, but more range to go farther. The Wilderness badge earned its following honestly, and the hybrid doesn't dilute it. Planning to put one in your driveway?
