Chevy didn't just refresh America's second-best-selling truck. They tore it down and rebuilt it. The next-generation 2027 Silverado 1500 is a ground-up redesign — new engines, new face, new interior — and for the first time in a long time, the off-road story is front and center.
New Gen 6 V8s lead the powertrain lineup
Let's start with what's under the hood, because this is the headline. The 2027 Silverado debuts GM's sixth-generation small-block V8 family: an all-new 5.7L V8 replacing the old 5.3L, and a 6.6L V8 stepping in for the 6.2L. Those two V8s headline four powertrain options — the pair of new V8s, an enhanced 2.7L TurboMax four-cylinder, and the 3.0L Duramax turbodiesel inline-6 — and every one of them now runs through a 10-speed automatic. Chevy is even claiming one of the new V8s will be the most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 in its class. No hybrid or plug-in for 2027 — Chevy is betting on the efficiency of the new gas engines instead.
Z71 off-road gear is now standard on every 4WD Silverado
Here's the part that matters if you actually leave the pavement: the Z71 package — skid plates, hill-descent control, and an off-road-tuned suspension — is now standard equipment on every 4WD Silverado. That's a big deal. Off-road hardware used to be an upcharge; now it's baked in.
And the dedicated off-road trims went up a level. There are three lifted trims in the lineup: the ZR2, Trail Boss, and Custom Trail Boss. The ZR2 rolls on 35-inch mud-terrain tires with a 2-inch lift, standard front and rear locking differentials, and off-road suspension. Step up to the ZR2 Bison Edition and you get distinctive bumpers, rocker-panel protection, 18-inch beadlock wheels, and extra skid plates. This is Chevy putting the ZR2 squarely in Raptor territory.
A bolder face and a screen-filled cabin
The look got meaner too. Chevy gave the truck a bolder stance with a stronger front face, larger U-shaped LED daytime running lights, a more pronounced grille, LED headlights and taillights, beefier wheel-opening moldings, and new rocker treatments — with each trim getting its own front fascia and lighting signature.
Inside, it's a screen fest. A 16.3-inch center touchscreen and a 12.2-inch driver display are now standard across the entire lineup, and ZR2 and High Country trims add an 11.5-inch passenger screen — pair it with the rear camera mirror and Chevy says you're looking at over 60 inches of digital display.
Capable truck, factory lighting
Factory lighting is better than ever, but it's still factory lighting. The moment you point a ZR2 or Trail Boss down a dark trail, you find the edge of those headlights fast. That's where ditch lights, a roof-mounted light bar, and a set of flush-mount pods turn a capable truck into one you can actually drive hard after sundown. The new Silverado is built to play harder — the lighting should keep up.
When it lands and what it'll cost
The 2027 Silverado goes on sale late 2026, with pricing announced later this year. For reference, the current Work Truck starts just below $40,000 and the ZR2 tops $70,000. It'll be built at GM's full-size pickup plants across North America.
